To help you make your move a smooth one we have written a basic moving checklist which you can print and work through. Although not neccessary exchastive, it can be a vital guide to making sure you dont forget those important little points.

:: One month to one week before the move


 
  • You may wish to order or make some Change - of - address cards with your new number on it to give to friends, family. These can often be printed relatively cheaply and easly at service stations.
  • Arrange Contents Insurance at our new house to cover you from the date of moving, and also during the removal process.
  • Sort through and throw out any unwanted items.
  • Arrange (with your council) for extra rubbish disposal.
  • Arrange for either a removal firm, or book a diy self drive van, to carry out the removals.
  • Book accomodation at a hotel if neccessary.
  • Arrange for the children to be looked after.
  • Arrange for the pets to be transpoted and looked after, booking them into kennels if neccessary.
  • Get boxes, packing material, stick-on-labels, and strong string ready for the move.
  • Inform your telephone provider of the move so that they can close the account or move it to the new address (keeping your old number).
  • Inform your friends and family so that they can help you on the day with packing, driving etc.)
:: Old address  
  • Arrange for meters to be read buy utility suppliers on the moving day.
  • Arrange for gas and electricity accounts to moved from to the new address.
  • Arrange for disconnection of cooker, washing machine and dishwasher.
:: New address  
  • Arrange for reconnection of dishwasher, washing machine and cooker.
  • If any carpets are to be laid, arrange for this to happen before your furniture (etc.) arrives at the new address, if possible.
:: One week before the move


 
  • Inform your bank, credit card companies and building society (etc.) of your change of address.
  • Arrange to drop off keys for old address and collect keys for new address from estate agent.
  • Put valuables and important documentation in a safe place.
  • Arrange with seller and seller wether to leave on electricity, water and heating.
  • Apply to Post Office for redirection of mail.
  • If you are taking any fixtures or fittings (e.g. lights etc.) you must replace them with standard light fittings or get an electrition to do it for you.
 
  • Finish packaging and labelling items.
:: Day before


 
  • Pack personal overnight bag.
  • Get some cash out, including some change for telephoning etc.
  • Organise meals and drinks for moving days (keep the troops happy).
  • Take children to friends or relatives.
  • Take pets to arranged carer.
  • Switch freezer to maximum (if moving with contents).
  • Defrost refrigirator.
